Tesla tops BMW in luxury car sales to kick off 2022

Tesla jumped to an early lead in the US luxury car race in 2022 with the most registrations in January in the country.

According to data released by Experian, Tesla saw a rise of 49 per cent over January 2021 with 37,162 registrations in January.

BMW came in second with 30,563, representing an 8.2 per cent rise in year over year registrations.

Rounding out the top three was Lexus with 24,843, a 5.5 per cent decrease since last year. Interestingly, Mercedes saw a steep decline and only registered 22,022, a 20 per cent decrease compared to 2021.

As per the same data set from Experian, Tesla dominated January EV registrations. They held three of the top five spots for the month. (via Automotive News)

  1. Tesla Model Y- 18, 549
  2. Tesla Model 3- 13,604
  3. Tesla Model S- 3,903
  4. Ford Mustang Mach-E- 2.781
  5. Hyundai Ioniq 5- 1,253

Overall in 2021, BWM held onto the title of top US luxury brand, but it was tight. BMW registered 347,453 vehicles in 2021, while Tesla registered 342,412 vehicles.

However, many experts believe that 2022 could be a big year for Tesla in the US space.

The company is gearing up to open Giga Texas, and their Fremont factory is reportedly pushing output to new levels.

At least to say, with this strong performance in January, it would not be surprising to still see Tesla at the top of the list by the end of 2022.
