Snuuzu Model Y mattress review – worth every penny

Sleeping in the back of a Tesla usually means making a few compromises, but that wasn’t my experience with the Snuuzu mattress. I recently had the chance to use it for the first time on a camping trip in our Model Y, and it completely changed my expectations of car camping.

The Snuuzu mattress isn’t cheap, but after spending a weekend sleeping on it, I genuinely believe it’s worth the investment if you plan to do any amount of car camping. The Mattress Only package starts at C$1,127/US$899, while the Mattress Bundle with two pillows is around C$1,265/US$998. Canadian pricing will fluctuate slightly due to the exchange rate.

Exceeded Every Expectation

The first thing that stood out was the quality. Everything about it feels premium, from the materials to the way it’s put together. But the biggest surprise was just how comfortable it is. Snuuzu says it’s like sleeping on a hotel mattress, but I would say it’s better than a lot of hotel mattresses I’ve stayed on. You can even adjust the firmness of the mattress to your liking once it is inflated.

I’ve been in two rear-end car accidents over the years, so I have a bad back and often wake up sore after sleeping in hotels or on regular inflatable mattresses. I was expecting to feel at least a few aches, but I woke up with no sore back, no stiff neck, nothing.

Even my wife, who can be pretty picky about where she sleeps, was impressed. We both had a great night’s sleep, and she is already thinking about where we can go for another trip so we can use it again.

Setup Takes Just Minutes

Setup is about as easy as it gets. You unzip the storage bag, roll the mattress out, press the inflate button on the integrated pump (it can easily be removed and recharged), and about two minutes later it’s ready to go.

Packing it away is just as simple. Press the deflate button, clip it together, roll it up, and it slips right back into the bag. Usually, products like this are next to impossible to fit back into their original packaging after you’ve used them once, but Snuuzu really thought about the design and since the bag stays attached to the mattress, it rolls up neatly and fits back in without any wrestling or frustration.

Easy to Keep Clean

One feature I really like is the removable top cover. The sleeping surface is made from a soft organic Lyocell fibre, and when can eventually gets dirty from camping trips (it is white afterall), but you can simply unzip it and throw it in the washing machine.

It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference if you plan to use the mattress regularly. Instead of trying to spot clean, you can easily wash the part you actually sleep on and have it feeling fresh again for your next adventure.

Stores in the Sub-Trunk

Another feature I really appreciated is how the mattress rolls up small enough to fit in the Model Y’s sub-trunk, so you don’t have to sacrifice cargo space or have it sliding around in the back when you’re not using it.

It Actually Feels Like a Real Bed

The sleeping surface is incredibly soft, and it doesn’t feel like you’re lying on a typical air mattress. Whatever combination of foam and air they’ve used really works. It genuinely feels like you’re sleeping on a proper bed instead of camping in the back of your car.

I also got the optional bundle with two pillows, and they are fantastic. I normally sleep with a memory foam pillow at home, so I wasn’t expecting much, but this is surprisingly close in comfort.

One Small Drawback

If I am looking for something even remotely negative to say about the Snuuzu mattress, it’s that I found it had a bit of a “new product” smell when I first unpacked it. It wasn’t a big deal, but I’d recommend letting it air out for a day before your first trip, although we’ve been told they are updating their manufacturing process to eliminate the smell altogether.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I couldn’t be happier with the Snuuzu mattress for the Model Y. It’s one of those products that actually lives up to the marketing. If you’re on the fence because of the price, that’s understandable. But after spending even just one night on it, it is worth every penny and you can tell where the money went. It is exceptionally well made, unbelievably comfortable, and has completely changed how I think about car camping.
