Volkswagen has officially unveiled the new ID. Tiguan, giving its popular electric SUV a new name, updated design, and a long list of improvements. The replacement for the ID.4 and ID.5 will launch in Europe early next year, before arriving in Canada later in 2027.

The name might be familiar, but the ID. Tiguan is not simply an electric version of the gas-powered Tiguan. It continues to use Volkswagen’s dedicated electric vehicle platform, now upgraded to MEB+, while adopting a more traditional SUV design.

Volkswagen is offering three powertrain configurations, starting with a rear-wheel-drive model producing 188 horsepower and equipped with a 58 kWh battery. A larger 77 kWh battery is available with either 282 horsepower and rear-wheel drive, or 295 horsepower and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

Range reaches up to 600 km under Europe’s WLTP testing cycle, although Canadian ratings will likely be lower.

The ID. Tiguan also offers some practical improvements over its predecessor, including a new 32-litre frunk, 534 litres of rear cargo space, and a towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg.

Inside, Volkswagen has made some significant changes based on customer feedback. Physical buttons return to the steering wheel, while climate controls and audio adjustments are easier to access without navigating touchscreen menus.

The dashboard features a 10-inch driver display, 15-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 12-inch passenger display that can play games and entertainment without distracting the driver.

Other additions include standard one-pedal driving, improved driver assistance technology, a smartphone-based digital key, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability through an adapter connected to the charging port.

Pricing in Germany starts at €42,695, with pre-sales beginning October 13. That works out to roughly $68,000 CAD at current exchange rates, though the German price includes 19 per cent VAT. Before tax, it’s closer to $57,000, which gives a rough idea of where it could land here.

Volkswagen has confirmed the ID. Tiguan will reach Canada in 2027, but Canadian pricing, available configurations, and an exact launch date have not yet been announced.
