Tesla Semi factory gets official inauguration in September

Tesla has announced its new high-volume Semi factory is getting its official opening party next month. The inauguration, as Tesla called it, will take place on September 24, 2026 in Nevada, roughly five months after the factory started production.

Tesla announced the party through a post on X, with several fans sharing their invitations received via email online.

Tesla Semi factory – a brief history

Tesla first announced plans for a dedicated high-volume Semi factory in January 2023 as part of a major expansion of Giga Nevada. The project was initially set to be an extension of the existing Giga Nevada as part of a planned US$3.6 billion investment that also called for a new 100 GWh 4680 battery cell facility and approximately 3,000 additional jobs.

However, plans changed since that original announcement, as they have many times since the Semi was first revealed in 2017, and the company began construction on a dedicated factory on its own site just down the road from Giga Nevada in 2024.

Tesla said the factory was being designed to eventually produce as many as 50,000 Semis annually, with initial builds targeted for late 2025 and a production ramp through 2026. Tesla missed the production deadline, announcing the first Semi had rolled off the production line in April 2026.

The company was still targeting high-volume production by the end of the year, but that timeline also recently slipped to 2027, based on wording in the most recent quarterly shareholder deck.

With the dedicated factory now operational and getting its official opening party next month, Tesla finally has the infrastructure in place to move beyond the small number of Semis produced over the last several years. The next challenge will be ramping the new production line and proving it can achieve its stated capacity of 50,000 trucks per year.

Tesla offers the Semi in two different configurations. A Long Range variant that can travel up to 500 miles (804 km) on a single charge that costs around US$290,000. There is also a Standard Range variant for US$260,000 that goes 325 miles (523 km) before needing to recharge.
