BYD has reached the milestone of 10,000 ultra-fast Flash Chargers in China. The automaker plans to double the capacity before the end of the year.
BYD is ensuring its drivers do not stand around while charging their cars. Their customers in China now have access to 10,000 Megawatt Flash chargers, which can charge their batteries in minutes.
The current milestone comes just six months after BYD rolled out the record-breaking chargers in March. The first 5,000 units came online in April, with another 2,000 added by the end of June. They are spread out over 325 cities in the largest auto market.
However, the Chinese EV maker is not resting on its laurels, as it plans to install the 20,000th Flash charger in 2026. The network will comprise 2,000 highway and 18,000 city charging stations.
While that might sound ambitious, BYD has entered into strategic partnerships to reach the goal. The company will install the Flash chargers at Sinopec’s fueling stations, instead of constructing charging stations from scratch. The oil giant boasts a network of over 30,000 stations in China.
The Flash chargers are among the fastest in the world, rated at up to 1,500 kW. This enables the liquid-cooled system to charge an automobile from 10 to 70 percent in just five minutes. In other words, drivers can add up to 400 km while having a tea break. In comparison, Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers can charge at roughly one-third of the speed.
BYD plans to introduce the T-shaped Flash chargers abroad. Europe will get 3,000 stalls, starting this year, as part of its expansion strategy on the continent. In North America, BYD is looking to hire a Flash charging business development manager in Canada as it prepares to enter the market.
