BYD is taking another step toward a Canadian launch, and this time the company may be preparing to bring one of its most talked-about technologies with it—its ultra-fast Flash Charging network.
A new job posting by the Chinese electric vehicle giant reveal the company is now looking to hire a Charging Infrastructure Development Manager in Toronto, a role focused on expanding charging partnerships and supporting the deployment of charging solutions across the country. (via Reddit)
This posting is particularly noteworthy because it indicates BYD is not only preparing to sell vehicles in Canada, but also laying the groundwork for supporting them with its own charging ecosystem.
The position adds to a growing list of Canadian job openings that have appeared in recent weeks as BYD builds out its local leadership team ahead of an expected market entry.
What is BYD Flash Charging?
BYD unveiled its Super e-Platform, featuring what it calls “Megawatt Flash Charging,” just a few months ago in March. The technology is built around a 1,000-volt architecture capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW (1.5 megawatts) of charging power—roughly triple the output of Tesla’s V4 Superchargers currently available for compatible EVs in the U.S..
According to BYD, compatible vehicles can add up to 400 kilometres of driving range in just five minutes, a charging speed that approaches the time required to refuel a gas-powered vehicle. The system combines new battery technology, upgraded silicon carbide power electronics, and liquid-cooled charging equipment designed to safely handle the enormous power levels involved.
Since its announcement, BYD has already deployed thousands of Flash Charging stations in China and continues to rapidly expand the network. The company has also announced plans to bring the technology to international markets, including Europe, where it plans to build 3,000 of these stations.
Why It Could Be a Big Deal for Canada
For Canadian drivers, ultra-fast charging could help address one of the biggest concerns surrounding EV ownership: long-distance travel.
While Canada’s charging infrastructure continues to grow, long stretches of highway in northern and rural regions still require careful planning. A charging session measured in minutes instead of half an hour could make road trips significantly more convenient, especially during winter when energy consumption tends to increase.
BYD’s technology has also demonstrated strong cold-weather charging performance. Tests conducted on the latest Flash Charging platform showed vehicles could charge from 20% to 97% in approximately 12 minutes even after being exposed to temperatures as low as -30°C, conditions that are not uncommon for many parts of Canada.
Canadian Launch Preparations Continue
The charging infrastructure role comes just days after BYD posted nearly a dozen management positions covering sales, marketing, dealer development, finance, legal affairs, after-sales service, and operations. Several of those postings specifically referenced building a nationwide dealer network, suggesting the company intends to enter Canada through a traditional dealership model.
The job postings are so far proving to be popular, with all of them receiving over 100 applications each, according to LinkedIn.
While reports suggest BYD’s Canadian passenger vehicle launch may not happen until 2027 due to ongoing regulatory and import-related uncertainties, the company’s recent hiring efforts indicate preparations are well underway.
