Waymo has announced an expansion of its driverless ride-hailing service, adding nearly 250 square miles across five U.S. cities as the company prepares to launch in Canada in 2028.
According to an update published by Waymo on Tuesday, the expansion covers Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area, with the additional territory being introduced over the next week.
In Los Angeles, Waymo is extending its service area south along the coast into the South Bay, including Torrance, while riders in the San Francisco Bay Area will gain access to more areas in the south, including a new connection to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system at Berryessa Station
Nashville is also getting a larger service area, with Waymo extending coverage further south to places such as the zoo. Meanwhile, in Orlando, Waymo is nearly doubling its coverage area in the east, along with enhanced service downtown.
In San Diego, the company is expanding north into La Jolla.
The expansion comes as Waymo continues to grow its driverless operations across the United States. The company opened public service in San Antonio, San Diego, and Tampa on October 14.
Last Wednesday, Waymo also gave Las Vegas riders access to Harry Reid International Airport, within a 24-square-mile service area.
The company’s expansion plans extend beyond the United States. On October 16, Waymo confirmed it intends to welcome its first riders in Toronto in 2028, marking its planned entry into the Canadian market.
Waymo’s expansions comes one day after Tesla significantly expanded its Robotaxi service area in Houston.
