Tesla’s Model Y claimed the top spot in Germany’s new vehicle sales rankings in September, beating every gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric competitor in one of Europe’s largest automotive markets.

According to registration figures from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), Tesla registered 8,038 Model Ys during September, a 260.9% increase compared to the same month last year. That was enough to comfortably beat the Volkswagen Golf, which finished second with 6,580 registrations, followed by the VW Tiguan with 5,751.

The result marks only the second time the Model Y has topped Germany’s overall sales charts, following its previous victory in September 2022. It also represents a new monthly sales record for the electric SUV, surpassing the 6,841 registrations recorded in March.

The Model 3 also had an impressive month, jumping 284.7% year-over-year to 4,512 registrations, placing sixth among all vehicles.

Combined, Tesla registered 12,552 vehicles in September, an increase of 268.7% from a year earlier. That propelled the automaker into seventh place among all brands, with a 4.9% market share. Tesla was also Germany’s best-selling electric vehicle brand, ahead of Volkswagen and Skoda.

While Tesla’s quarterly delivery cycle contributed to the September spike, the broader German EV market was also setting records.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations climbed 94.7% to 88,599 vehicles, accounting for a record 34.5% of all new car sales. Overall vehicle registrations increased just 9% to 256,774 units.

The Model Y’s performance also extends beyond Germany. Tesla’s electric SUV topped the September sales charts in several other European markets, including France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

With 29,464 German registrations through September, the Model Y now ranks second among electric vehicles year-to-date, trailing the Skoda Elroq.
