The French EV market has exploded in recent months, and Tesla is leading the charge with the Model Y in the driver’s seat.
According to data shared by AAA DATA, the EV market in France is surging. Electric vehicles accounted for 30 percent of total sales in June, representing a 94 percent increase from the same period last year. EV share jumps to 35 percent when excluding business purchases.
Dominating the sales chart was Tesla, which sold 7,474 units in June, a 105 percent year-on-year increase. Cumulative sales in 2026 stood at 28,694, which was 141 percent better than the first half of last year.
This means Tesla controlled 3.96 percent of France’s auto sales in June and 3.35 percent in H1 2026.
The bestselling electric model was the Tesla Model Y SUV, with 6,635 deliveries. The Renault 5 came second, with 4,213 units.
Tesla sales rose in other key EV markets in Europe. Denmark recorded 39 percent year-on-year growth, while Sweden performed better with 56 percent, according to data from Denmark’s bilstatistik.dk and Mobility Sweden.
It has been a turnaround for Tesla, which saw plummeting sales in 2025 as a fallout of the company’s CEO’s brief dabble into politics. The company is expected to report a 5 percent increase in deliveries for Q2 2026. A notable exception, however, is Norway, where Tesla registrations declined by 43 percent in June.
Meanwhile, the Model Y is leading sales outside Europe. The battery-electric SUV was the best-selling imported vehicle in Japan in May. It topped the sales chart in South Korea and Hong Kong, too.
