Tesla’s 2026 Summer Update introduced one of the biggest upgrades to its in-car Grok assistant, giving the AI the ability to finally directly control vehicle functions.
Tesla highlighted the expanded functionality in the release notes, saying Grok can make phone calls, play music, adjust the climate and search the Controls menu. The update also added the ability to activate Grok completely hands-free by simply saying “Hey Grok.”
Now that owners have had time to put the feature through its paces, we’re getting a much better idea of just how much more Grok can actually do, and the list goes well beyond Tesla’s brief description.
An extensive list compiled and tested by Tesla owner Julian includes 170 different voice commands, 116 of which, or just over 68%, can now be handled through Grok.
Climate controls are among the most comprehensive. Drivers can ask Grok to change the temperature, adjust fan speed and airflow, activate Dog Mode or Camp Mode, control the front seat heaters and heated steering wheel, and even turn on Bioweapon Defense Mode.
Grok can also find nearby Superchargers, restaurants and other destinations, navigate home or to work, and change route preferences such as avoiding tolls or ferries. More conversational requests like “I am hungry” also work.
Another particularly useful addition is location-based reminders. Drivers can ask Grok to remind them about something when they arrive at their next destination, adding a more context-aware capability to the in-car assistant. For now, Grok simply delivers the reminder, but it raises an interesting possibility for the future: instead of reminding the driver to perform a task upon arrival, Grok could eventually carry it out itself, such as activating Keep Climate On or another vehicle setting.
Other supported commands include opening the glovebox, folding the mirrors, saving Dashcam footage, activating Sentry Mode, operating the charge port door and controlling the wipers. Drivers can also ask Grok for their tire pressures or odometer reading, or to display the latest software release notes.
There are still some gaps. Traditional voice commands remain necessary for dozens of functions, including opening the trunk or frunk, changing the volume and adjusting several vehicle settings.
