Elon Musk visits Nuevo León for meetings with government officials

Elon Musk spent the weekend in Nuevo León, Mexico, where he met with various state officials.

According to reports by local media publications Reforma and El Manana, Musk met with the Undersecretary of Investment of the Ministry of Economy, Emmanuel Loo and Mariana Rodriguez, wife of Governor Samuel García Sepulveda.

The government of Nuevo Leon and Tesla have forged a great relationship over the last several years.

In April, Tesla hosted the Governor and other Ministers at Giga Texas, which included a factory tour and meetings with Tesla officials.

Then in June, we reported that Nuevo Leon had granted Tesla its own exclusive customs line at the US-Mexico border for its suppliers to bring goods to Giga Texas.

Tesla suppliers now have a dedicated lane for Mexico-United States border crossing

The region is still amidst a tech renaissance, with several Tesla suppliers already calling the region home.

These suppliers include:

  • EnFlex Corp
  • Quanta Computer
  • ZF Friedrichshafen AG
  • APG
  • Faurecia SE

Although we do not know specifics, local sources report the meeting was about a potential Tesla investment in the region. Tesla did not provide a comment on the potential meeting or any planned investment in northern Mexico.

However, given the close proximity to Giga Texas we know that Tesla’s relationship with the up-and-coming Mexican state is undoubtedly close and becoming closer over time.

Elon Musk even hinted at the potential for a factory in Mexico. During an all-hands meeting earlier this year Musk said the company was considering sites in both Canada and Mexico for the next North American Gigafactory.

Although based on more recent comments and meetings it looks like Canada is the front runner to be the location of the next Gigafactory.
