Italy Confirms Tesla FSD Application Is Officially Under Review

Tesla has officially begun the process of bringing Full Self-Driving (FSD) to Italy, with the country’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport confirming it has received the automaker’s application.

The application comes after we previously reported that an Italian senator had urged the government to prioritize approval of Tesla FSD after its authorization in the Netherlands. A senior official at Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has now confirmed the process is underway.

In a LinkedIn exchange with Mirko Montagna, Servedio Gaetano, General Director at the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, revealed that Tesla only recently submitted its application. (via @MirkoMontagna0)

“Tesla requested the recognition of the Dutch homologation in Italy the other day by submitting an application to my structure. The matter is in the analysis phase also based on the indications from the European community.”

The reference to the “recognition of the Dutch homologation” is significant. Earlier this year, the Netherlands became the first European Union country to approve Tesla’s FSD system under the new regulatory framework, opening the door for other EU member states to evaluate the technology using that approval as a starting point.

While there is still no indication of how long Italy’s review could take, confirmation that the application has already been submitted and is actively being analyzed indicates positive progress. The ministry also noted its review is taking into account guidance from European authorities, suggesting the process will align with broader EU regulatory requirements.

Once approved, Italy would become another European market where Tesla owners have access to FSD through an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Currently FSD is available in the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, and Belgium.
