Tesla’s California VPP breaks record as 85,774 homes deliver over 600 MW

Tesla’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in California has set a new record, delivering enough electricity during a grid support event to rival the output of a large utility-scale power plant.

During peak demand on October 6, 85,774 homes equipped with Tesla Powerwalls participated in the event, collectively reaching a peak output of 601 MW. Tesla’s entire Powerwall fleet, including batteries that were not participating in the event, peaked even higher at 634 MW.

The event also delivered an impressive amount of energy over its duration. According to Tesla’s VPP dashboard, participating Powerwalls supplied 932 MWh to the grid.

Tesla’s VPP Keeps Getting Bigger

The latest event comes less than a month after another major California VPP event. During a September heatwave, nearly 69,000 Powerwall owners were simultaneously supplying more than 500 MW to the grid, with Tesla’s dashboard showing 507 MW at one point.

The October event represents a substantial increase. Compared with those September figures, there were nearly 17,000 more participating homes, while peak participating output climbed by almost 100 MW.

It is an even more dramatic increase compared with just a few years ago. In 2023, Tesla’s California VPP had just over 7,000 participating Powerwall customers. The October event involved more than 12 times that number.

Tesla’s VPP uses software to coordinate thousands of individual Powerwalls, allowing stored energy to be discharged during periods when electricity demand is highest. Instead of constructing a dedicated peaker plant that may only be needed for short periods, utilities can tap into battery capacity already installed in customers’ homes.

There is also a benefit for the homeowners providing that capacity. Participating Powerwall owners are compensated for the electricity they send back to the grid, turning their home battery into a potential source of revenue while supporting grid reliability.

Tesla revealed last year that Powerwall owners earned nearly US$10 million through its VPP programs in 2024.
