Tesla’s California VPP delivers over 500 MW to grid from nearly 69,000 homes

Tesla Powerwall owners across California combined to send more than 500 MW of electricity back to the grid on Wednesday, providing a significant boost as the state dealt with increased demand during a heatwave.

According to Tesla Energy, roughly 69,000 Powerwall owners participated in the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) event at its peak, collectively supplying the grid with the equivalent output of a conventional power plant.

Tesla’s live VPP dashboard showed the output reaching 507 MW, with 68,887 homes participating in the event. Another 1,046 homes were in Backup Mode, while Tesla’s California VPP network has grown to more than 105,000 homes overall.

The event provides a good example of what Tesla has been building toward with its VPP programs. Instead of relying on a single large power station to respond to spikes in electricity demand, thousands of Powerwalls can be coordinated to discharge stored energy at the same time.

Tesla’s VPP Network Continues to Grow

California is Tesla’s largest VPP market in North America, with Powerwall owners participating through programs including the Demand Side Grid Support Program (DSGS) and Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP).

The network has grown substantially over the last several years. Back in 2023, Tesla’s California VPP included just over 7,000 participating customers. The latest numbers show how quickly the concept has scaled, with nearly 69,000 homes contributing during a single event.

There is also a financial incentive for Powerwall owners to participate. Tesla revealed last year that it paid nearly US$10 million to Powerwall owners across its VPP programs in 2024.

For utilities, however, the bigger advantage is having hundreds of megawatts of distributed battery capacity available when the grid needs it most. Wednesday’s 507 MW event shows that residential batteries can now provide power at a scale comparable to a traditional power plant – without having to build one.
