Tesla is looking to tap into Germany’s growing start-up culture to help fix bottlenecks and optimize output at Giga Berlin.
The company is partnering with JUNI, a start-up incubator in Berlin and Brandenburg for science- and tech-based ventures, to launch the Battery Cell Giga Challenge. The challenge is for tech startups to identify solutions that directly improve Giga Berlin’s quality, costs, safety systems, and overall assembly speed, with a focus on the facility’s 4680 cell manufacturing line.
This is not a small fund; it has $350 million earmarked for tech ready to be tested in real-world conditions. For those who are interested you will need three things:
- a proof of concept
- the idea must be relevant to manufacturing; and
- a solution that is easily scalable.
For potential teams and companies, the challenge will run in five phases:
- Online Applications
- Screening by Tesla
- First Technical Discussions
- Pitch Day
- Pilot Project
Companies who make it through screening and pitch day will be awarded a paid pilot project at Giga Berlin.
The challenge is a great opportunity for local European companies to enter the Tesla supply chain, but it is also key to Tesla meeting its battery production targets over the next few years. Tesla is aiming to produce 18GWh of batteries annually at Giga Berlin, and every small improvement will help make this production target a reality.
