Fiat has officially opened U.S. orders for the all-electric Topolino, bringing one of Europe’s smallest EVs to American buyers at a starting price of just US$13,995. While it may look like a miniature city car, the Topolino is technically a quadricycle rather than a conventional automobile, putting it in a unique category aimed at short-distance urban transportation.
The Topolino arrives with a 5 kWh battery pack that delivers up to 46 miles (74 km) of driving range. Power comes from a modest 8-horsepower electric motor, giving the two-seater a top speed of 19 mph (30 km/h) in its standard configuration.
Later this year, Fiat plans to offer a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) conversion kit at no additional cost. Once installed, the kit increases the vehicle’s maximum speed to 25 mph (40 km/h), allowing it to be driven legally on public roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph (56 km/h) or lower, depending on local regulations.
Customers will still need to factor in a mandatory US$990 destination fee, bringing the effective starting price to US$14,985 before taxes and registration.
Despite its compact dimensions, measuring just 99.6 inches (2.53 metres) long and weighing 1,073 pounds (487 kg), the Topolino includes several modern conveniences. Standard equipment includes a digital gauge cluster, USB-C charging port, integrated phone holder, and a full recharge takes about four hours using its 2.3-kW onboard charger.
Buyers can choose between a traditional hardtop model with doors or the distinctive Dolce Vita version, which replaces conventional doors with rope openings for an open-air driving experience.
The Topolino is expected to appeal primarily to buyers in golf communities, resorts, university campuses, and neighbourhoods where low-speed vehicles are already common, rather than serving as a replacement for a traditional passenger car.
Although Fiat is finally bringing the Topolino to the U.S., Canadian buyers won’t be getting the same opportunity. Stellantis has previously confirmed there are currently no plans to launch the tiny EV north of the border, leaving Canadians to admire the “little mouse” from afar.
