Tesla has launched a home energy management system that can help cut electricity bills. The new offering uses AI to adjust energy consumption.
The system is called Tesla Home, and is powered by the company’s AI optimisation software known as Opticaster. The tool tracks household energy usage and uses the insight to predict solar energy production and future consumption.
Opticaster works by developing a plan to achieve energy goals set by the user. It is intelligent enough to switch to solar or stored energy when prices are high. It will also automatically charge Powerwall batteries and EVs from solar or the grid when prices go down.
Tesla claims the Opticaster AI engine has been trained with over a hundred million hours of operational data harvested from Powerwalls. The system also offers virtual power plant (VPP) access to sell energy to the grid.
Tesla Home can integrate third-party energy products. “Designed to work with a variety of home energy systems, Tesla Home connects Powerwall to Solar Panels, Solar Roof, Wall Connector and other third-party energy products, with no additional equipment needed.”
However, the Powerwall is the backbone of the system, making it more than just an energy backup device.
According to Tesla, existing customers do not need additional hardware to use Tesla Home. The home energy ecosystem can be accessed from the Tesla smartphone app. Tesla has promised that future over-the-air updates will improve Opticaster and help homeowners save more on energy costs.
