Lucid Air gets official 520 mile EPA rating exceeding expectations

Lucid has announced its first electric vehicle, the Air, has officially received its EPA range rating, and the figures come in even higher than anticipated.

Last month the company announced the Air Dream Edition was going to be available in two new variants – Range and Performance. Both editions are now the longest range EVs ever tested by the EPA.

The Dream Edition Range equipped with 19″ wheels can travel 520 miles (836km) on a full charge. That’s a massive 115 miles (168km) more than the previous record holder, the Long Range (LR) Model S at 405 miles (652km).

Even when equipped with the larger 21″ wheels, the Range Edition can still eek out 481 miles (774km).

In a press release, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said the figures were acheived thanks to in-house technological improvements, and not by simply installing a massive battery pack.

“I’m delighted that our Lucid Air Dream Edition Range has been officially accredited with a range of 520 miles by the EPA, a number I believe to be a new record for any EV. Crucially, this landmark has been achieved by Lucid’s world-leading in-house EV technology, not by simply installing an oversize battery pack. Our race-proven 900V battery and BMS technology, our miniaturized drive units, coupled with our Wunderbox technology endow Lucid Air with ultra-high efficiency, enabling it to travel more miles from less battery energy. The next generation EV has truly arrived!”

If you want more speed, the Performance Edition is no slouch either, achieving ranges of 471 miles (758km) and 451 miles (725km) when on 19″ and 21″ wheels respectively.

Opting for the Grand Air Touring with less horsepower gets you almost the same range as the chart-topping Range Edition with 516 miles (830km) and 469 miles (754km) on 19″ and 21″ wheels respectively.

These figures have already been proven in real world testing. Last month the company used a pair of Range Edition cars to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco with plenty of range left over.

Lucid has yet to announce an official date when the first Air EVs will be delivered to customers, but is still targeting some time before the end of the year.
