Stellantis announces a $155 million EV investment in three Indiana plants

Stellantis announced yesterday that the company would invest $155 million in its three Kokomo, Indiana plants. The investment will see the Indiana Transmission, Kokomo Transmission and Kokomo Casting Plant develop and produce a new electric drive model (EDM).

The Kokomo-built EDM will be integrated into the STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms. The goal is to produce an EDM that will deliver a range of up to 500 miles or 800 km for the company.

The three Kokomo plants will do the following:

  • Casting the gearbox cover at Kokomo Casting.
  • Machining of the gearbox cover at Kokomo Transmission.
  • Gear machining and final assembly of the EDM at the Indiana Transmission Plant.

Following the retooling of the facilities, Stellantis will start production of the EDM in the third quarter of 2024 if everything stays on schedule.

The company is no stranger to Indiana and currently operates ten facilities in the state. In 2020, Stallantis announced a significant investment of $3.3 billion in the state. The investment would see some Stallantis facilities in Indiana transition to producing electric powertrains and supporting parts. As well the investment included a joint-venture Gigafactory with Samsung SDI to produce EV batteries for the North American market.
