Waymo is coming to Canada, with Toronto robotaxi service planned for 2028

Waymo is officially coming to Canada, announcing plans to launch its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Toronto in 2028. The Alphabet-owned company will begin testing vehicles on Toronto streets in the coming days, marking its first expansion into the Canadian market.

As with its expansion into any new city, the initial phase will see Waymo vehicles driven manually to map local roads before progressing to autonomous testing with trained safety specialists behind the wheel. The company is also establishing local facilities and expects to create hundreds of jobs as it prepares for commercial operations.

Waymo has been steadily expanding its robotaxi network across the United States, while Tesla has been growing its own Robotaxi service since launching in Austin in June 2025.

Waymo partners with Canadian fleet operator

To support its Canadian launch, Waymo is expanding its partnership with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management, which already supports its operations in San Diego.

Element will oversee fleet maintenance, charging infrastructure, vehicle cleaning, and other daily operations needed to keep the robotaxis running.

Waymo says its autonomous vehicles have travelled more than 400 million kilometres without a human driver, with 95% fewer crashes involving serious injuries or worse compared to human drivers in its operating markets.
