Tesla’s Robotaxi service includes the ability to create temporary geofences around emergencies, road closures, construction zones, and other restricted areas, according to the company’s first responder documentation.
In the Robotaxi First Responder Interaction Plan, Tesla explains that emergency personnel can contact Tesla Robotaxi First Responder Support to redirect or geofence autonomous vehicle traffic.
To make the request, first responders must provide their name, agency, badge or identification number, the longitude and latitude of the closure, the reason for the closure, the expected duration, and a callback number.
Once the request is made, Tesla says it can establish a temporary geofence that blocks Robotaxi service within 1,000 feet of the provided location for approximately one hour. First responders can also request a longer closure or an extension until further notice.
Designed to Keep Robotaxis Away From Active Emergency Scenes
The feature is important because it addresses one of the key real-world challenges for autonomous vehicle fleets: responding to unpredictable emergency scenes.
Robotaxis may be able to follow rules of the road under normal conditions, but accidents, police activity, fires, floods, road work, and emergency detours often require fast changes that are not always reflected in mapping data. A temporary geofence gives first responders a way to keep Tesla’s autonomous fleet away from an active scene.
The guide also explains that Robotaxi is designed to respond to hand signals from first responders, follow routes marked by traffic cones, and automatically pull over when emergency vehicles approach with lights and sirens activated.
Robotaxi Can Also Respond to Severe Weather Alerts
Tesla also says its autonomous vehicles can follow public safety alerts during severe weather. In those situations, affected Robotaxis can avoid impacted roadways or be ordered to return to the nearest charging station or parking lot.
The document further states that Robotaxi will not accept new rides when extreme weather is expected. If a vehicle unexpectedly encounters severe conditions, it is designed to pull over at the nearest safe stopping location and notify Tesla Robotaxi Support.
