Access to the internet has long been linked to better learning outcomes worldwide, and the latest research from Kenya further confirms that when kids have stable, reliable internet access, learning can improve. Â
According to a recent pilot study led by Grow X Education and the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), stable, reliable internet access via Starlink services improved learning outcomes across 30 schools.
The pilot, which took place across 28 counties, gave teachers and students access to Starlink services stable enough to support advanced digital learning activities. In these schools, 82% of teachers reported integrating digital tools in the classroom, including lesson planning, targeted revisions and student assessments.
For students, access to stable internet saw 89% of learners demonstrate high or very high engagement in the digital lessons. Along with 79% of pupils being able to access digital educational platforms independently.
Even with all the positive news, the study noted ongoing issues with learners-to-device ratios in the 30 schools. These ratios exceeded 5 pupils per 1 device across the entire pilot.
Coming from this study, Grow X and CEMASTEA recommend increased investment in digital devices and satellite internet infrastructure across the region. Along with localized teacher training on the platforms and ongoing professional development for school administrators and teachers to better deploy this technology in the classroom.
