Rivian launches early access program for Point-to-Point hands-free driving

Rivian is preparing to put its next-generation driver assistance technology into the hands of owners, launching a new Autonomy Early Access Program ahead of the introduction of Point-to-Point hands-free driving later this year.

The invitation-only program is open to second-generation R1 and R2 owners in the U.S. According to RivianTrackr, the rollout will be limited at first, with owners in California and Florida becoming eligible first. Those selected are expected to receive the autonomous Point-to-Point software through an over-the-air (OTA) update in December.

Point-to-Point builds on Rivian’s existing Universal Hands-Free system by integrating navigation, allowing vehicles to follow a programmed route through city streets, intersections, and highway transitions, much like Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD).

Canadians and Gen 1 owners left out

Owners interested in participating can register through their Rivian account, provided they have an active Autonomy+ subscription. Unfortunately, Rivian says both Canadian vehicles and first-generation R1 models are excluded from the program.

Rivian will select participants based on several factors, including how frequently they use existing Autonomy features and their recent safety record. In what may bring back memories (or nightmares) for early FSD Beta testers, forward collision warnings and other driving events will also be considered.

Those selected will have some responsibilities beyond simply testing new features. Participants must use the software weekly, report issues, complete monthly surveys, and agree to share vehicle location and camera data.

They must also sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), and participation is unpaid. Rivian will review eligibility every 30 days and can remove owners who no longer meet its requirements.

The launch of the early access program comes just one week after comments from Rivian’s James Philbin that Point-to-Point remained on track for a year-end debut.

Rivian is set to host its second annual Autonomy & AI Day on December 9, which could provide the first detailed look at the automaker’s attempt to take on Tesla’s FSD technology.
