Ford is moving closer to launching its most affordable electric pickup, opening a preorder invite list for the upcoming Fathom, which starts at C$42,690 in Canada, ahead of its official launch in 2027.

Interested buyers can now register on Ford’s website to receive updates and an invitation to preorder the truck when reservations officially open early next year.

In the U.S., the Fathom will start at just US$28,350, or US$29,945 including destination fees, making it significantly cheaper than Ford’s previous electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning.

A new approach to affordable EVs

The Fathom will be the first vehicle built on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, which has been developed specifically to reduce manufacturing costs and make electric vehicles more affordable.

Although Ford describes it as a midsize pickup, prototypes spotted testing suggest it will be closer in size to the compact Maverick. Despite its smaller exterior, Ford claims the Fathom will offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4.

The truck will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with rear-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available.

Standard equipment will include a large touchscreen with Apple Maps navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a digital key, and bidirectional charging capability.

Every Fathom will also come equipped with the hardware needed for Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system.

Production begins in 2027

Ford plans to manufacture the Fathom at its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, which is undergoing a $2 billion transformation to accommodate a new production process.

Instead of a traditional assembly line, Ford will use three parallel production lines to assemble major vehicle sections before bringing them together.

Several important specifications remain unconfirmed, including driving range, battery capacity, and towing capability. Production is expected to begin in 2027, with customer deliveries scheduled for later that year.
