A new patent suggests the Tesla Roadster may debut with a deployable rear wing. The EV maker will reveal the supercar on October 1.
Diagrams in the United State Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent show the wing could be multi-functional, thanks to its ability to fold and sit flush with the body. When extended, the retractable wing increases downforce for added grip on the road.
The wing can also tilt, meaning the Roadster can corner faster without losing balance and accelerate out of corners faster. The high-performance car will also achieve better stability at higher speeds and more consistent handling.
The patent reveals the rear wing can fold in automatically right before an accident. In the event of an impending collision, the car’s advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) pull in the wing. This will reduce the likelihood of damage and other complications.
It is important to note that the wing is not yet guaranteed to be part of the Roadster. Companies apply for patents all the time without turning them into actual products.
The refreshed Roadster has high expectations to fulfil. Tesla itself has suggested the electric sports car will launch with cold-gas thrusters designed by rocket company SpaceX. The thrusters are rumoured to allow the Roadster to lift off the ground temporarily. However, other rumours have claimed Tesla is prepping a version that can actually fly.
Tesla has opened reservations for the Roadster in Canada and the US ahead of the October 1 reveal.
