According to Elon Musk, The Boring Company may soon start a hyperloop project between San Antonio and Austin.
In an X post, Musk noted that The Boring Company is working on a simple precursor hyperloop tunnel that will eventually be expanded between San Antonio and Austin.
The hyperloop would move passengers at more than 200 mph and cut the commute between the two Texas cities from 2.5 hours to under 30 minutes.
Now, Musk did not touch on any of the important details, including the route, cost, construction timeline, or who is funding this endeavour. We also don’t know whether this will be like the Vegas Loop, with the tunnel using Tesla vehicles, or whether it will be the first real-world attempt at the low-pressure tubes included in his 2013 Hyperloop paper.
On the official side, no government officials from San Antonio or Austin had heard from The Boring Company or Musk on the project. Nor are they aware of whether this project is related to the previously approved link between downtown San Antonio and the San Antonio International Airport that never got off the ground.
For years, Texas lawmakers have considered alternatives to I-35 to connect the two Texas cities. These alternatives have included potential passenger rail options, with studies showing that 2,000 daily commuters would use the service and that the trip would take roughly 2 hours.
If Musk’s hyperloop could happen, cutting that time by three-quarters could certainly increase potential ridership, but we are certainly a few years away from even testing that hypothesis.
