Fresh off a historic result in Australia, Tesla has added another sales victory in the region. In neighbouring New Zealand, the Model Y finished the May as the country’s best-selling electric vehicle EV.
According to registration data released by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and shared by the official Tesla Australia and New Zealand account on X, the automaker registered 415 Model Ys during the month.
The competition wasn’t particularly close. The BYD Atto 3 claimed a distant second place with 142 registrations, followed by the MG 4 with 141. Tesla’s lead meant the Model Y outsold the second-place vehicle by nearly three-to-one, highlighting the continued popularity of the electric SUV among buyers.

Model Y Leads a Changing EV Market
The latest registration figures show the Model Y continuing to build on its position as one of New Zealand’s most popular electric vehicles.
Beyond the Model Y’s 415 registrations, Tesla also placed another vehicle in the top rankings. The Model 3 recorded 75 registrations in May, finishing sixth among all battery-electric vehicles sold during the month.
Together, Tesla’s two models accounted for 490 registrations, giving the company a significant share of New Zealand’s EV market.
Several Chinese automakers also performed well in May. BYD placed multiple vehicles in the rankings, including the Atto 3, Atto 1, Sealion 7, and Atto 2, while Kia, MG, GAC Aion, and Dongfeng all secured spots in the top 15.
Strong Month Follows Australian Record
The New Zealand result comes just days after Tesla achieved a major milestone across the Tasman Sea. In Australia, the Model Y became not only the country’s best-selling EV, but also its best-selling vehicle overall in May. That gave the Model Y the distinction of being the first EV to ever top the national sales charts across all fuel types.
Tesla delivered more than 5,600 Model Ys in Australia during the month and over 6,400 vehicles in total.
