Tesla’s sales numbers are continuing to set records around the world in 2026. The latest come from Asia, where tesla topped the chart of imported cars in South Korea in May 2026, with the Model Y leading EV adoption. The electric SUV was also the best-selling vehicle in Hong Kong.
According to figures shared by the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), Tesla imported 10,866 cars into the country. The Model Y was the top dog across both electric and fossil fuel-powered propulsion, with 7,195 units. The Y L variant was the second best seller with 1,513 units.
BMW brought in 6,555 units to take the second place, while Mercedes-Benz imported 3,553 for the third spot. Audi, Lexus, and Volvo imported 1,509, 1,291, and 1,058 units, respectively. Tesla’s biggest EV rival, BYD, registered only 1,032 units, about 50 percent less than in April.
Purely electric vehicles accounted for 48.6 percent of total exports, followed by hybrids at 40.4 percent. Gas and diesel-powered cars represented 10.4 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively.
Total car imports for May stood at 29,860 units, down 5.9 percent year-on-year and 12 percent from the previous month.
Tesla also had a good month in Hong Kong. The EV maker posted on X that it was the top-selling brand on the island, with the electric Model Y outselling every other vehicle, including fossil fuel-powered models.

Tesla also reported a sales record in Japan in May, with nearly 2,000 EVs sold, pushing its 2026 totals to 8,194 units. It was a 182 percent increase from the same month last year and comes as the automaker overhauls its local retail and service strategy in Japan.
The Model Y was also the best-seller in the Australian market in May.
