Ireland Confirms Talks With Tesla Over FSD Approval

Tesla can add another country to their list of European nations actively engaged in discussions over potential approval of Full Self-Driving (FSD).

According to a new report from Irish broadcaster RTE, Tesla is currently working with Irish regulators, including the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), regarding the deployment of FSD in the country.

The discussions follow recent developments in the Netherlands, where Dutch authorities became the first in the European Union to grant approval for Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) system after more than a year of testing on public roads. That approval is now helping form the basis of a wider EU-level review process.

Ireland Preparing for Autonomous Vehicle Technology

Ireland has been developing a national strategy for connected and autonomous vehicles since 2018, although the framework has yet to be finalized. However, recent amendments to Ireland’s Road Traffic and Roads Act in 2023 created a pathway for Level 2 systems to eventually operate legally in the country.

Currently there are no hands-free systems officially approved for use on Irish public roads, despite some vehicles already possessing the required hardware.

Europe’s FSD Approval Process Gains Momentum

Momentum for Tesla’s FSD rollout in Europe has been building quickly after Dutch regulators granted approval in April. Since then, Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) fleet in the Netherlands surpassed 10 million kilometres driven in less than a month.

The Netherlands has also been actively lobbying other EU member states to accelerate broader approval, while countries including Sweden have already opened the door to expanded testing programs. Both Belgium and Italy are also seeking to fast-track FSD approval following the decision in the Netherlands.
