Tesla introduces more affordable Model 3 designed for Singapore’s COE rules

Tesla has expanded its lineup in Singapore with the launch of a new entry-level Model 3 variant that significantly lowers the price of entry into the brand.

The new Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive 110 is now classified under Singapore’s Category A Certificate of Entitlement (COE) system, a move that could make the electric sedan accessible to a much larger group of buyers.

The new variant starts at S$179,999 with COE included, making it Tesla’s cheapest vehicle in Singapore to date.

What makes this launch particularly important is not just the vehicle itself, but how Tesla managed to fit it into Singapore’s unique COE structure.

What is Singapore’s COE system?

Singapore uses a COE system to control the number of vehicles on its roads. Under the program, buyers must bid for a certificate that allows them to own and operate a vehicle for 10 years. These certificates are divided into categories based largely on vehicle power and specifications, and prices can fluctuate dramatically depending on demand.

For EV buyers, one of the most important thresholds is Category A, which is reserved for less powerful and more mass-market vehicles. Historically, many Tesla vehicles fell into Category B because of their higher output, even if they were relatively affordable compared to luxury competitors. Category B COEs are often tens of thousands of dollars more expensive than Category A permits.

How Tesla qualified for the cheaper Category A COE

By introducing the new “110” variant with lower performance figures, including a slower 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds, Tesla was able to qualify the Model 3 for Category A. That is a major strategic move in Singapore, where COE pricing can have a bigger impact on the final purchase price than the car itself.

The change effectively allows Tesla to compete more directly with mainstream EVs instead of being grouped alongside higher-end luxury models. It also helps explain why Tesla reduced the acceleration performance compared to other Model 3 variants. In Singapore, lower output can translate directly into lower ownership costs.

Tesla is clearly betting that buyers in the city-state prioritize efficiency, technology, and affordability over outright performance. The company says the Model 3 RWD 110 consumes just 13kWh/100km, while still offering all standard features like Sentry Mode, Camp Mode, Cabin Overheat Protection, Trip Planner, and full Tesla app integration.

Tesla is also promoting the new variant with financing offers starting from S$1,401 per month at a promotional 1.28% interest rate until May 10, 2026.
