Just hours before the Cybercab launch event is expected to begin, Tesla has published a new Rider Guide. The guide gives us our first look at how passengers will interact with the purpose-built robotaxi, including what happens when something goes wrong.
Unsurprisingly, the guide confirms Cybercab has just two seats and no steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal. Riders instead control their trip through the central touchscreen and Tesla’s Robotaxi app.
However, one of the more interesting details is Cybercab’s emergency stop system. A physical Stop button located between the overhead dome lights can be pressed to initiate an immediate pull-over request. Doing so also ends the ride and connects the passenger with Tesla Robotaxi Support.
Passengers can also ask Cybercab to pull over using either the touchscreen or Robotaxi app. The vehicle will find a safe place to stop, although Tesla says that it may take longer to do so while travelling on a highway.
For more serious situations, if a rider believes they are in immediate danger, they can fully pull the mechanical door release. Doing so ends the trip and tells Cybercab to stop in its lane as soon as it can safely do so. If the vehicle is travelling at highway speeds, it may pull over instead of stopping in the lane.
The guide also explains how Tesla will keep an eye on what is happening inside the Cybercab. A cabin camera can detect whether the vehicle is occupied and can also be used if a rider needs help during an emergency. Cybercab’s microphone can send audio to Tesla when a passenger contacts support or when the vehicle detects a safety-related event.
After passengers leave, the cabin camera can even check whether the Cybercab is clean and whether any belongings were left behind before its next trip.
Other details include automatic doors that recognize the ride requester’s phone, a 20.2-cubic-foot rear trunk, and a restriction preventing children under 13 from riding in Cybercab for now.
