Tesla is preparing for its Cybercab event in Austin this afternoon, and new details from the select few that have been invited to attend and updates from the company suggest Tesla is planning something much different than a typical vehicle launch event.
Long-time FSD tester Chuck Cook shared an update while walking through downtown Austin this morning. According to Cook, Cybercabs and Tesla’s existing Robotaxi Model Ys are already a common sight around the city as Tesla prepares for the event.
More importantly, Cook revealed that attendees are subject to a social media embargo during the event. Tesla is restricting photography, video and first-impression content until after the event finishes, meaning details from inside may not emerge in real time, unless they come directly from Tesla.
The company has also reportedly arranged special Robotaxi network access for some attendees on Friday. Cook said designated email addresses will receive priority access, although it appears as though riders won’t be able to choose whether a Cybercab or Model Y arrives.

As for updates from Tesla, the event is expected to start at 4:45 pm in downtown Austin, according to a post on X from Cybercab engineering lead Eric. The company also updated its Robotaxi terms of service to include Cybercab, indicating the purpose-built autonomous vehicle will soon be integrated into the existing network.
Further evidence of its imminent integration was an update to the Robotaxi app itself, which now supports Cybercab. Based on images in the release notes, riders will be able to select between a Cybercab and a Model Y Robotaxi.
Additionally, when you order a Cybercab, the Robotaxi app will display the same colour as the light strip on the front of the Cybercab, allowing you to easily identify which Cybercab is waiting for you.
The invite-only event does not mean Cybercab service is opening broadly across Austin today. Instead, it appears Tesla is beginning another controlled stage of its Robotaxi rollout, this time with a select few hand-picked fans and social media influencers in a select part of downtown Austin.
The big question after today is how quickly Tesla will be able to expand Cybercab access, and how quickly it can expand to other parts of the U.S.
