Tesla battery supplier CATL to build new facility near Giga Shanghai

One of Tesla’s battery suppliers in China, CATL, is planning to expand their footprint and build a large new facility near Giga Shanghai.

According to sources familiar with the plans who spoke to Reuters, the new facility would be able to manufacture 80 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cells on an annual basis, making it the CATLs biggest production facility.

In terms of vehicles, that would be enough to make 800,000 EVs per year.

This new supply would add to the production capacity at CATLs existing facilities of 69.1GWh. The company already has another 77.5GWh under construction. When both new projects are complete, the company would have an annual production capacity of 226.6GWh.

That level of production would see the company further its lead as the world’s number one supplier of EV battery cells, and help supply Tesla with enough batteries in China well into the future.

Tesla and CATL first entered into a formal battery supply agreement in February 2020, one month after Giga Shanghai opened and deliveries began.
