As data center protests and complaints continue to circulate about new projects, Starlink’s localized 50% discount on its Residential Plan has added over 2,000 customers.
As we reported in June, SpaceX decided to slash Starlink monthly costs in half in response to growing community backlash over a nearby data center project.
The new updated numbers come from the SpaceXAI Memphis X account, which is providing updates on the Southaven data center project.
One of the major sticking points for the community and environmental law organization is that SpaceX is using a loophole in the current legislation to power the project. The company originally installed 69 portable gas turbines to power the data center, which did not require a permit.
However, in response to growing public anger over the unpermitted power plant, SpaceX confirmed they would replace all 69 portable units with 41 permanent turbines, which have been authorized under a Clean Air Act permit. However, this phase-out will take until July 2027 to be completed.
So, although some can enjoy heavily discounted Starlink services, the local pushback and potential legal action against the Southaven facility are not slowing down and could instead serve as a cautionary tale for tech companies looking to establish gas-powered data centers.
