Rivian confirms removal of R2 seat ventilation fans to reduce cabin noise

Rivian has confirmed it will not restore backrest ventilation to newer R2 SUVs after quietly removing one of the fans from its front seats, a decision that has frustrated some owners and reservation holders.

The change affects R2s built from approximately VIN 10,000 onward, according to owners. R2s built before the change have a fan in both the seat base and the seatback on each front seat. Newer models have just one fan, directing airflow through the seat cushion.

The R2 still offers ventilated front seats, and the heating system remains unchanged. According to Rivian, the change was made to reduce cabin noise.

“Because the seat back ventilation generated excessive cabin noise, we streamlined the system. R2 seat heating is unchanged,” the automaker explained.

However, some owners have questioned that explanation, pointing out that the ventilation fan speed is adjustable and that noise was primarily noticeable at higher settings.

Rivian won’t offer retrofits

The controversy over the removal of a key feature grew after Rivian customer support confirmed that owners receiving the updated seats would not be able to have the missing fans installed.

“Unfortunately, we are not offering retrofits to restore seatback ventilation on vehicles built with the updated design,” a representative wrote in an email shared online.

The decision has prompted some reservation holders to reconsider their purchases, particularly those who experienced the original ventilation system during test drives.

Interestingly, a recent teardown of a newer R2 reportedly revealed that the mounting hardware and electrical connector for the removed fan remain in place.

Rivian’s website continues to advertise heated and ventilated front seats without specifying that airflow is now limited to the cushion.
