Rivian’s electric delivery vans get EPA approval with AWD and larger battery

Rivian has received EPA certification for new versions of its electric delivery vans, bringing all-wheel drive (AWD) and a larger battery pack to the commercial vehicles used by Amazon and other fleet operators.

The approval, issued September 17, covers the 2027 model year EDV 700 Large in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and AWD configurations, the first major hardware upgrade to Rivian’s delivery van platform since production began in 2021.

The biggest upgrade is to the battery – 129 kWh usable, versus 90 kWh in current vans. Both packs rely on LFP cells.

According to EPA certification documents, the larger battery increases the EDV 700’s unadjusted laboratory test range by nearly 36%, from 261.7 miles (421 km) to 355.5 miles (572 km) in the front-wheel-drive configuration.

The new dual-motor AWD version achieves 322.25 miles (519 km), an improvement of approximately 23% over the standard van. Rivian currently advertises approximately 160 miles (257 km) of range for its existing delivery vans.

The larger battery will be exclusive to the EDV 700, while the smaller EDV 500 retains its existing battery and drivetrain configuration.

According to RivianTrackr, AWD could prove particularly useful for Amazon deliveries in areas where snow, ice, and muddy roads can make operating front-wheel-drive delivery vehicles more challenging.

The additional range could allow Amazon to expand electric deliveries into rural areas where longer routes have limited adoption.

Amazon’s Rivian fleet surpassed 40,000 vehicles across North America earlier this year. The new configurations will also be available through Rivian’s Commercial Van lineup for other fleet customers.
