Rivian is bringing a little Hollywood magic to its vehicles this Halloween, teaming up with Sony Pictures for a Ghostbusters-themed software update that turns its electric trucks and SUVs into ghost-hunting machines.

The limited-time Halloween Mode begins rolling out today, October 9 and will be available through November 2, 2026, bringing new animations, lighting effects, sounds, games, and hidden surprises to Rivian vehicles.

At the centre of the update is a dedicated Ghostbusters app, featuring a retro-inspired interface and a large red switch that activates the experience from the in-car display. Owners can choose from several themed light and sound effects, including the Ecto-1 siren, Proton Pack, Slimer, and Ghost Trap.

There’s also a new Trick or Treat Mode that plays the iconic Ghostbusters theme song while coordinating the vehicle’s displays, interior lighting, and exterior effects. Some features can even be activated remotely through the Rivian mobile app, allowing owners to surprise unsuspecting trick-or-treaters.

For those who enjoy hunting for Easter eggs, Rivian has hidden Ghostbusters characters throughout its infotainment system. There’s also a new ‘Mallow Mash arcade game where players race to catch Mini-Puft marshmallow characters while parked.

Rivian Builds Its Own Ghostbusters Ecto-1

Rivian isn’t stopping at software. Rivian has also turned R1S SUVs into Ecto-R1s, six of them according to MotorTrend, inspired by the original Ghostbusters Cadillac. They feature the familiar red graphics, Ghostbusters logos, and roof-mounted equipment, including sirens, spotlights, and a radar dish.

The vehicles will appear at Rivian retail locations and Halloween events, while original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray is helping promote the collaboration in a new commercial.

The update continues Rivian’s tradition of elaborate Halloween features, following previous themes inspired by Back to the Future and Knight Rider. Tesla has already rolled out its own Halloween Mode in software update 2026.38.3, but Rivian’s latest offering takes the seasonal fun to another level.

Owners will need software version 2026.36.0 for R1 vehicles or 2026.36.40 for the R2, along with the latest Rivian mobile app.
