BYD has demonstrated the cold-weather charging performance of its latest battery technology, charging a Denza Z9GT after the vehicle spent 24 hours at -30°C (-22°F).
The test used BYD’s second-generation Blade Batterykelown connected to one of the automaker’s new 1,500 kW Flash chargers. After sitting at -30°C (-22°F) for 24 hours, the Z9GT was plugged in with a 20% state of charge.
Just 12 minutes later, the battery had reached 97%.

Under ideal conditions, the company says its second-generation Blade Battery can charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes and reach 97% in under 10 minutes. The extreme cold test added only a few minutes despite the battery starting at -30°C.
While the Denza Z9GT itself isn’t confirmed for Canada, BYD is preparing to enter the Canadian market. The Chinese automaker has been laying the groundwork for its arrival since the new quota import system was announced earlier this year. Most recently, the company launched a Canadian website, indicating its headquarters are in Markham, Ontario.
BYD also appears to have bigger plans than simply selling cars. Earlier this year, Canadian job postings revealed the company was hiring for positions to eventually bring this Flash charging technology to Canada.
The company has already installed over 10,000 Flash charging stations in China in just six months, and plans to double that number by the end of the year.
