A video of a Tesla driver apparently asleep at the wheel has kicked off an RCMP investigation into the incident.
The video, which was recorded on Highway 1 between Golden and Revelstoke, shows a Tesla with pink accents, with a driver who appears to be sleeping during automated operation.
The concerned motorist who spotted the issue called 9-1-1 and left a report with the RCMP, including the vehicle details.
Highway 1 in this area of the province is a winding, mountainous road with short passing sections to allow traffic to pass around transport trucks on the undivided highway. As the fastest route between Banff National Park and Vancouver, this stretch of highway is busy and dangerous.
In BC, Level 3, 4, and 5 autonomous driving is prohibited and can result in a fine ranging from $368 to $2,000, up to six months in jail, and driver penalty points. However, per BC Highway Patrol, the potential fines have not stopped these incidents.
RCMP ask that if a member of the public spots someone who appears to be asleep or otherwise not in control of a vehicle, they report it to a local police detachment.
