Tesla and SpaceXAI Activity on X Fuels Merger Speculation

Tesla and SpaceXAI employees appear to be connecting on X, with the new wave of follows between executives and staff at the two Elon Musk-led companies over the past 48 hours suggesting a merger may be on the horizon.

According to Big Tech Alert, an account that monitors executive activity on X, SpaceX’s President and COO, Gwynne Shotwell, recently started following Tesla’s official account.

The account also claims numerous Tesla and SpaceXAI executives and employees have begun following one another.

The latest activity was first highlighted Saturday evening, when the account reported Shotwell’s new follow. On Sunday morning, the account added:

“Note: MANY Tesla executives and rank and file employees have started following SpaceXAI executives, and vice versa, in the last 48 hours.”

The account did not identify any additional employees involved, and the reported follows, including Shotwell’s, have not been independently verified. Neither company has publicly commented on the activity.

The activity on X has fuelled speculation online about a possible merger between Tesla and SpaceXAI.

Musk has addressed a tie-up before. In July 2025, when an X user asked whether Tesla investors supported a merger between xAI and Tesla, Musk replied, “No.” He instead wrote that “If it was up to me, Tesla would have invested in xAI long ago.” A non-binding investment proposal then failed at Tesla’s November 2025 meeting because abstentions counted as “no” votes.

In May, as we reported, Musk declined to comment on merger speculation, citing restrictions tied to the SpaceX IPO.

The companies are already linked. In January, Tesla announced a roughly $2 billion investment in xAI, along with a framework agreement between the companies. xAI was subsequently brought under SpaceX and rebranded SpaceXAI in July. Earlier this month, Tesla renamed its AI account to Tesla Super Intelligence, adopting the @TeslaSI handle shortly after Musk confirmed plans to rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI.
