Tesla Model Y was the best-selling import in South Korea in May

After only being available in South Korea for just over a month, the Tesla Model Y has already proven its dominance. It was the top selling imported vehicle, gas or electric, for the month of May.

In reaching the top spot, the Model Y beat out repeat sales winners from Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen.

According to data from Carisyou Data Lab, a total of 3,461 Model Y’s were registered in May. That easily surpassed the Mercedes Benz E250 which sold 1,257 units based on data from the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).

The addition of the Model Y in South Korea builds on what is already a strong market for Tesla. In 2020 the automaker registered more than five times as many sales as it did in the previous year.

Even though Giga Shanghai is much closer to South Korea than the US, the Model Y’s sold in the country are actually from Fremont. The first batch was spotted at Pier 80 – Tesla’s exporting pier in San Francisco in early April.
