Tesla files application to become an official UK electricity provider

Tesla has reportedly filed an application for a licence that would allow them to supply electricity in the United Kingdom (UK).

While it did not provide any details surrounding the reason for the application, sources say it is in relation to ‘Autobidder’. (via Reuters)

According to Tesla’s website, Autobidder allows “independent power producers, utilities and capital partners the ability to autonomously monetize battery assets.” The automaker further explains it is a “real-time trading and control platform” that manages assets and optimizes portfolios in order to maximize revenues.

The software is already successfully operating in South Australia at Hornsdale Power Reserve, which Tesla reports has already driven down energy prices in the region.

What this all likely means is Tesla is preparing to expand and build its utility-scale battery operations in the UK in the not too distant future.

Tesla recently installed a Megapack in Saint John, which is hoped to save the local utility company hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. It also hopes to install the largest Megapack in the world soon in Hawaii, that will power most of the Hawaiian islands.
