According to a company document, Rivian is planning to open a second US-based plant with an investment of $5 billion. The project, dubbed Project Tera, requires at least 2,000 acres of land for their latest plant.
Rivian hopes to open the plant in the second quart of 2023, with construction starting in the fall of 2021. The plant would produce vehicles and battery cells, according to sources close to the company.
According to multiple sources, the State of Georgia is pushing hard to attract the Amazon-backed automaker. Georgia is pitching a site near Savannah, Georgia, but other locations closer to metro Atlanta are in consideration as well.
Georgia Gov. Kemp announced earlier in July that the State is kicking off a statewide initiative to tackle supply chain issues to ensure the State is an attractive option.
Back in May, Georgia bought a nearly 2,300-acre site in Bryan County 30 minutes from the Port of Savannah. The State purchased the property with the sole purpose to attract a sizeable automotive plant that needed interstate-highway and railway access.
If Rivian chooses Georgia, they would not be the first in the EV sector. SK Innovation built an EV battery plant in Jackson county, producing battery cells for VW and Ford.
At the same time, Georgia is also a finalist for a joint venture battery cell plant between Ford and SK Innovation.
