Volkswagen has ended its automated driving venture with Bosch. The automaker is now shopping for another partner.
According to insider reports, Volkswagen is not convinced that Automated Driving Alliance (ADA) could be competitive. ADA is the partnership formed with Bosch through Volkswagen’s subsidiary CARIAD.
The collaboration, however, has not been a total waste. The two partners developed SAE Level 2 Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) powered by AI. The system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel, but not for extended periods.
Volkswagen plans to deploy the technology in the upcoming electric ID.EVERY1, which is slated to arrive in 2027. However, the technology can work with even internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, too.
Volkswagen is still committed to autonomous driving. CEO Oliver Blume stated that the now-edefunct partnership gives his company a strong foundation for achieving its goal of “bringing highly automated driving to Europe and North America.”
Automobilwoche reports that the ADA collaboration was meant to run till 2029. However, Volkswagen, based on findings by Handelsblatt, bailed out because it could not see ADA’s ADAS moving to SAE Level 3 fast enough. This level of ADAS lets the vehicle control driving completely, although the driver must be alert to take over within 10 seconds if required.
Potential candidates for filling the void left by Bosch include Mobileye. The Israeli-based company has already worked with Volkswagen on Level 2+ technologies for ICE vehicles. Volkswagen has even adopted Mobileye’s Level 4 ADAS for the ID.Buzz AD, which Uber will soon put on the road in the US.
Mobileye is also launching its own robotaxi service in the US in 2027.
