With a successful roll-out of domestic services, United Airlines has expanded its Starlink services to transatlantic flights. The first flight was one of the company’s flagship routes, a Boeing 777-200 travelling from Newark to London Heathrow.
The move comes as United has completed one of the fastest Starlink Wi-Fi rollouts in the aviation industry. Launched last Spring, United has flown over 311,000 flights with Starlink equipment on board. This early success has been due to United’s ability to install the equipment at a clip of more than one aircraft per day. At this pace, United’s entire widebody fleet should be fully equipped by mid next year.
For United customers, the Starlink difference has been a major win, with Wi-Fi satisfaction scores doubling since Starlink’s launch. United offers free Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, and with 250 Mbps per aircraft, executives and families love the fast, buffer-free service.
United’s rapid rollout has certainly increased pressure on other US-based carriers, which are scrambling to secure better, faster satellite internet services. Hawaiian Airlines was the first US-based carrier to roll out the service in February 2024. Since then, American, Alaska, Southwest and JetBlue have all launched or announced Starlink services.
