As Rivian starts volume production of its R2 SUV, CEO RJ Scaringe is already hinting at additional variants that may be released in the future.
In an interview with Reuters, Scaringe hinted that the company has a program planned for the R2 but would not go into details. However, based on the interview, it seems like a pickup variant and a performance variant, like the R3X crossover, could be coming for the R2. These would be in addition to the trims that the company has already announced.
An interesting tidbit is that variant production would not occur at the company’s Normal, Illinois, facility, where the launch-package R2 is being built. Instead, Rivian will use its Georgia-based facility to support the production of variants of the new vehicle.
Now, it will be a few years down the line before we see any variants actually hit the production lines. For now, the company is focused on delivering the first R2’s to external customers, which should start in July.
The company is planning to deliver between 22,000 and 23,000 R2’s in 2026. Production is continuing to ramp up to include the R2’s affordable entry-point trim in late 2027.
Rivian also has an outstanding order with Uber to deliver 10,000 autonomous R2’s for use as robotaxis, which will hit the road in 2028.
