Severe storms moved through central Illinois over the weekend, causing damage at Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal.
According to local reports and images circulating online, one section of the facility—identified as Building 2—appears to have sustained significant structural damage. The affected area houses portions of Rivian’s body shop and general assembly operations for the upcoming R2 platform.
Photos taken from the south side of the plant by McLean County EMS show a partial roof collapse, with debris scattered across the area. While the full extent of the damage has yet to be confirmed, early indications suggest the impact was concentrated on the southern portion of the building.
Despite the apparent severity, wind speeds peaked around 90 mph (145 km/h), classifying it as an EF1 tornado. Fortunately, Rivian confirmed that no injuries were reported at the facility.
“No one was injured at the Normal plant after a storm with tornado warnings caused damage at the plant. We are currently evaluating the extent of the damage,” a company spokesperson said.
The storm system caused widespread disruption, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency. Officials said the declaration would help accelerate recovery efforts and ensure resources are deployed efficiently. “This declaration allows us to ensure all necessary resources are aligned to support our residents and restore services as quickly as possible,” officials said in a release.
For Rivian, the timing of the damage could prove challenging. Building 2 plays a key role in preparing for the launch of the R2, a more affordable electric SUV aimed at significantly expanding the company’s market reach. Any disruption to assembly operations or facility readiness could have downstream effects on production timelines, though it remains too early to determine the scope of the impact.
