Tesla has set a new monthly sales record in Japan, capping off a breakout second quarter and continuing a trend that has been growing over the last six months.

According to data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA), Tesla recorded 3,997 registrations in Japan in June 2026. That is up from 1,411 registrations in June 2025, representing an increase of approximately 183% year-over-year.

The June result marks Tesla’s best month ever in the Japanese market, easily surpassing its previous record. As with previous monthly reports, Tesla’s figures are listed under JAIA’s “Others” category because the company does not separately disclose official registration data in Japan. However, the category is widely understood to consist almost entirely of Tesla registrations.

The record June performance follows a strong April and May. Tesla recorded 1,041 registrations in April and 1,996 in May, bringing its second-quarter total to 7,034 vehicles. That makes Q2 Tesla’s strongest quarter ever in Japan.

Tesla has now registered approximately 12,197 vehicles in Japan through the first six months of the year, up about 166% compared to the same period last year. More importantly, Tesla has already surpassed its entire 2025 total of 10,600 vehicles, and it did so before the year was even half over.

Tesla moving quickly up Japan’s import rankings

Tesla’s surge has also changed its position in Japan’s imported vehicle market. Earlier in the year, Tesla moved past Audi in cumulative registrations, climbing into fourth place among imported brands behind Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen.

With June’s record result, Tesla is now closing the gap even further on the long-established European brands that have historically dominated Japan’s import market.

The Model Y has been a major driver of that growth. Tesla Japan recently announced that the Model Y was the No. 1 vehicle by model among foreign-brand new registrations in May 2026, a significant milestone for the company.

Retail, service, and incentives driving growth

Tesla’s performance in Japan has been building for more than a year. The company shifted toward mall-based retail locations, expanded its showroom footprint, and began improving after-sales support with plans to grow its service network to more than 30 locations.

Those changes are being helped by a more attractive ownership proposition. Tokyo recently expanded local EV incentives, which can be combined with national subsidies to significantly reduce the effective cost of a Model 3 or Model Y for qualifying buyers by as much as half.

With 12,191 registrations already recorded through June, Tesla is now on pace for more than 24,000 registrations in Japan in 2026 if the current trend continues, a figure that would be more than double last year’s record.
