Tesla’s retail strategy in Japan fuels 200% sales growth in April

Tesla’s rapid growth in Japan is showing no signs of slowing down, with new registration data revealing the automaker delivered 1,041 vehicles in April 2026. That is a roughly 200% increase year-over-year, and puts the company on pace for its strongest year ever in the country.

The April results also pushed Tesla’s year-to-date total to 6,194 vehicles, a massive 151% increase from the 2,468 units recorded during the same four-month period in 2025. That places Tesla fifth overall among imported passenger vehicle brands in Japan so far this year, trailing only Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi.

The figures come from the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA), where Tesla’s sales are grouped under the “Others” category because the company does not officially disclose detailed registration data in the country. However, it is widely recognized that the overwhelming majority, if not all, of those registrations belong to Tesla. (via @teru_tesla)

Tesla on pace for its best year ever in Japan

The strong April performance suggests Tesla could be heading toward its best-ever sales year in Japan. The company already set a record in 2025 with approximately 10,600 deliveries, nearly doubling its previous high established in 2022.

Now, with more than 6,000 units already delivered through the first four months of 2026, Tesla is running well ahead of last year’s pace and could realistically deliver between 16,000 and 20,000 vehicles in Japan this year.

A major reason for the surge in sales has been Tesla’s aggressive retail expansion strategy under Japan country manager Richi Hashimoto. Instead of relying primarily on roadside dealerships, Tesla shifted toward smaller storefronts inside busy shopping centres, making the brand more visible and accessible to everyday consumers.

Tesla expanded to 29 retail locations across Japan last year, including first-time entries into regions like Okinawa and Hokkaido. At the same time, the automaker revamped its sales operations and customer engagement approach, helping improve conversion rates and overall efficiency.

Service and charging network expansion underway

Tesla is also doubling down on after-sales support to sustain that growth. Earlier this year, we reported Tesla plans to expand its Japanese service network to more than 30 locations. The company is targeting existing automotive facilities and warehouse properties to speed up deployment, while also partnering with more than 50 third-party auto care facilities across the country.

The expansion is particularly important in Japan, where vehicles are required to undergo mandatory inspections after three years of ownership.

Tesla is also rapidly growing its Supercharger footprint in the country, with plans to exceed 1,000 charging points by 2027. Combined with low-interest financing offers and government EV subsidies, the improvements are helping lower the barrier to entry for Japanese consumers considering an electric vehicle.
