Tesla buyers in Tokyo could soon see the price of a new Model 3 or Model Y reduced by nearly half thanks to one of the most aggressive electric vehicle (EV) incentive programs in the world.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced this week it will raise local EV subsidies by up to ¥300,000 (C$2,600/US$1,900), bringing the maximum available incentive to ¥1.3 million (C$11,200/US$8,100) for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Under the current framework, Tesla vehicles qualify for a ¥300,000 (C$2,600/US$1,900) manufacturer-based subsidy tier alongside BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Mitsubishi, placing them below Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, but above BYD.
The manufacturer-specific incentives are tied to factors including EV sales performance, lineup size, and broader “green transformation” efforts. With Tesla’s momentum in Japan continuing to accelerate, the automaker could be well positioned to qualify for larger incentive amounts under the revised framework.
When stacked on top of Japan’s national EV incentives, qualifying buyers can potentially qualify for as much as ¥2.6 million (C$22,000/US$16,000) in combined incentives.
With the Model 3 RWD starting at ¥5.31 million and the new Model Y RWD priced from ¥5.59 million, a buyer qualifying for the maximum combined incentives could potentially see the effective purchase price reduced by nearly half.
This expanded incentive should drive Tesla sales in the country to even greater heights. Just yesterday we reported that Tesla registrations surged 182% year-over-year in May 2026, with nearly 2,000 vehicles delivered during the month and year-to-date sales climbing more than 150%.
Toyota and other Japanese automakers are also expected to benefit heavily from the program. Toyota’s bZ4X already qualifies for the maximum national subsidy, and when combined with Tokyo’s expanded local rebate, the effective purchase price of the electric SUV would also be cut in half, according to Nikkei Asia.
